Project Description

Inhabitect collaborated on an innovative project to install a small yet impactful green roof on a repurposed shipping container classroom located on Belle Isle, Michigan, directly behind the Aquarium. Designed to promote sustainability and educate visitors, this unique project demonstrates how green roof systems can seamlessly integrate into unconventional structures to enhance both aesthetics and environmental performance.

Working closely with the Director of Education and Engagement and her project team, Inhabitect provided guidance on construction, material selection, and layout, ensuring a seamless integration of the semi-intensive green roof system. The vegetated roof retains rainfall to support stormwater management, improves insulation for energy efficiency, and serves as a functional and environmentally responsible addition to this innovative classroom space.

This project exemplifies how living architecture can support community-oriented initiatives, blending functionality, education, and ecological mindfulness in an urban setting.
