In collaboration with the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians, Inhabitect worked at the Arthur Duhamel Marina in Peshawbestown, MI, to transform a highly compacted, impermeable area near a deep-water boat launch into a functional, permeable, and resilient space.
The project began with excavation and offsite stockpiling of the existing substrate. Next, we installed and compacted system-specific aggregates and geogrid layers to stabilize the subgrade, improve load distribution, and, most importantly, allow infiltration. Unilock Turfstone pavers were then installed, creating a permeable driving surface filled with angular stone. This permeable area will not only help manage and filter runoff but also serve as a designated boat wash-down zone, preventing the spread of invasive species and reducing pollutants from entering Grand Traverse Bay.
By combining advanced geotechnical and stormwater solutions with environmentally friendly materials, this project supports cleaner water and healthier ecosystems, showcasing Inhabitect’s commitment to protecting Michigan’s waterways.
