  • Green Roof – A series of custom aluminum planters is used to provide elevated vegetation. These will eventually be planted with materials that provide visual appeal, screening, and filtered shade. Large pedestal paver areas, made of both concrete and high-density wood, make this a fully accessible living space.

Project Description

Perched just outside downtown Detroit with commanding views of the city skyline, this private rooftop space was reimagined as a refined outdoor living space — balancing natural beauty with modern function. When the original architectural team’s design exceeded the homeowner’s budget, Inhabitect was invited to offer a new approach that delivered both vision and value.

Collaborating closely with the client, our team reshaped the rooftop layout and selected materials that would bring elegance, warmth, and longevity to the space. A custom pedestal paver system — blending bright concrete and rich Ipe wood — established a durable and elevated foundation. Twelve large, custom planters, now home to graceful birch trees, soften the skyline and introduce seasonal color and movement.

Two additional planters were later added for rotating displays, and a synthetic lawn “dog run” completes the terrace, offering a green space that’s as low-maintenance as it is inviting. To ensure long-term health and seamless daily use, Inhabitect integrated a drip irrigation system and ambient lighting, enhancing both plant vitality and atmosphere.

Since the initial installation in 2022, Inhabitect has provided ongoing maintenance services — ensuring the space remains as vibrant and polished as the day it was completed. Delivered on time and within budget, this project reflects Inhabitect’s commitment to transforming rooftop spaces into immersive, enduring environments.
