Project Description

Inhabitect provided site planning and land use and shoreline consulting services for this private property in Suttons Bay, MI. Located on a severely steep bluff, the site faced unique challenges related to erosion, access to Lake Michigan, and shoreline stability. To address these concerns, our team conducted a comprehensive dune monitoring study, utilizing advanced drone technology, to analyze the landscape and assess risks as well as opportunities.

This study focused on understanding the dune’s morphology, identifying the natural formations and transitions that define its structure. By evaluating the erosive forces at play, including wind, wave action, and groundwater movement, we were able to determine the key factors contributing to instability. Additionally, the assessment included an in-depth vegetation analysis, examining plant coverage and its role in stabilizing the bluff. Establishing and maintaining vegetation is one of the most effective ways to mitigate erosion, and our findings provided the landowners with clear insights into how their existing plant life contributes to soil retention.

One of the most impactful components of this project was the development of a detailed 3D model of the property. This visualization allowed the homeowners to see the current state of their landscape and anticipate future changes, helping them make informed decisions about land use and stabilization efforts.

By integrating innovative technology with ecological landscape planning, Inhabitect delivered a strategic approach to protecting and preserving this sensitive lakeside property for years to come. The client’s architectural and engineering teams also utilized our findings during the development of the drawings for the customer’s new home.
