This newly built home on the shores of Lake Michigan sat on a landscape marked by construction disturbance—displaced soils from foundation excavation, tree debris from site clearing, and uneven terrain. Inhabitect was brought in to transform the landscape into a more cohesive, useful, and ecologically resilient space while enhancing the homeowners’ connection to the natural surroundings. Our design team provided a full site plan, from shoreline to roadway, that aligned with the landscape and land-use goals of our client.
We removed non-native vegetation, introduced native plantings, and reinforced the lengthy driveway with large boulders to secure its edges against erosion—all while working within strict regulatory requirements.
To manage stormwater runoff effectively, we implemented strategic green infrastructure solutions and worked with the existing wetlands around the home. For outdoor living, we installed a spacious permeable patio overlooking Lake Michigan, as well as a meandering walking path that invites exploration into the landscape. The patio also boasts a custom-crafted boulder and cedar bench near the fire pit—perfect for taking in the lakeside views.
This project transformed a “rough” post-construction site into a sustainable, inviting landscape that blends seamlessly with its environment—meeting all regulatory obligations and mandates.
